How We Tested
Before the comparison, here’s how we set it up. If you want to skip to results, jump to the comparison table.
Testing Criteria
| Criteria | Weight | What We Measured |
|---|---|---|
| Issue Detection | 30% | How many real issues each tool found vs. our manual baseline |
| Accuracy | 25% | False positive rate — issues flagged that weren’t actually problems |
| Speed | 15% | Time from URL input to full report |
| Actionability | 15% | Were fix recommendations specific enough to act on? |
| Value | 15% | Feature-to-price ratio at each pricing tier |
Test Methodology
- 50 websites across ecommerce, SaaS, local business, publishing, portfolio, and nonprofit
- Site sizes ranged from 8 pages to 12,000+ pages
- Manual baseline: We manually audited 10 of the 50 sites to establish a ground-truth issue count
- Each tool ran the same sites within the same 48-hour window to control for site changes
- Scoring: Each tool was scored on a 1-5 scale per criteria, then weighted
What We Didn’t Test
- Keyword tracking features (separate category)
- Backlink analysis accuracy (covered in our link building guide)
- Content optimization features
- Reporting/white-label capabilities
We focused purely on the site audit capability since that’s what most people need first.

What Surprised Us
Before the detailed breakdowns, a few findings that went against conventional wisdom:
- Screaming Frog found the most raw issues but had the highest “noise” rate — many flagged items were informational, not actionable problems
- Free tools missed an average of 40% of issues that paid tools caught, primarily around JavaScript rendering, redirect chains, and structured data
- Speed varied wildly: Rankture completed full audits in 60–90 seconds. Screaming Frog took 5–15 minutes on the same sites. SEMrush averaged 3–8 minutes
- The $9.99/month tier from Rankture detected more actionable issues than several tools charging $99+/month, because it includes AI-powered fix suggestions that translate findings into copy-paste code
Detailed Tool Reviews
1. Rankture — Best Overall Value
Price: Free (5 audits/mo) | Lite $9.99/mo | Starter $29/mo | Pro $79/mo
What stood out: Rankture was the fastest tool we tested and the only one that provides AI-generated fix code alongside each issue. On a 200-page ecommerce site, it completed in 72 seconds and found 89% of our manual baseline issues.
Issue detection: Caught missing meta descriptions, broken internal links, missing alt text, heading hierarchy problems, Core Web Vitals failures, schema markup errors, and E-E-A-T signals. The AI fix suggestions were specific — not generic “add a meta description” but actual suggested text based on page content.
What it missed: Deep redirect chain analysis (3+ hops) and some edge cases in hreflang implementation. No backlink analysis.
Best for: Website owners who want actionable fixes fast. Small businesses and freelancers who need results without a learning curve.
Try it: Run a free SEO audit — no signup required.
2. Screaming Frog — Best for Technical Depth
Price: Free (500 URLs) | £259/year (unlimited)
What stood out: Screaming Frog remains the gold standard for raw technical data. It found the most issues in absolute numbers, including obscure problems like inconsistent trailing slashes, orphan pages, and pagination issues that other tools missed entirely.
The trade-off: It’s a desktop app with a steep learning curve. You need to know what you’re looking for. It doesn’t tell you “this is a problem and here’s how to fix it” — it gives you data and expects you to interpret it.
What it missed: No Core Web Vitals data in the free version. No AI/content quality analysis. No ongoing monitoring.
Best for: SEO professionals and agencies doing deep technical audits. Not for beginners.
3. Ahrefs — Best for Link + Audit Combo
Price: $129/mo (Lite) – $999/mo (Enterprise) — prices updated March 2026
What stood out: If you need backlink data AND site audits, Ahrefs is the most complete package. The Site Audit tool found 82% of our baseline issues and the backlink overlay adds context no other audit tool provides.
The trade-off: At $129/month minimum, it’s expensive if you only need the audit tool. The audit feature alone doesn’t justify the price compared to Rankture ($9.99) or Screaming Frog (£259/year).
Best for: Content marketers and link builders who also need audit capabilities.
4. SEMrush — Best All-in-One Platform
Price: $139/mo (Pro) – $499/mo (Business) — prices updated March 2026
What stood out: SEMrush runs 140+ checks per audit and the thematic grouping makes it easy to prioritize. The competitive analysis overlay is genuinely useful — you can see how your technical health compares to competitors.
The trade-off: Overwhelming for single-site owners. Many features you’ll never use. The audit tool alone doesn’t match Screaming Frog’s depth or Rankture’s speed.
Best for: Agencies and in-house teams who need one platform for everything (SEO, PPC, social, content).
5. Sitebulb — Best Visualizations
Price: £150/yr (Lite) – £350/yr (Pro)
What stood out: Sitebulb’s “hints” system is the best in the industry for explaining why something is an issue and what to do about it. The visual reports are client-ready without any customization.
The trade-off: Desktop only. No ongoing monitoring. If you need cloud-based collaboration or scheduled scans, look elsewhere.
Best for: Agencies who need beautiful client-facing reports.
6. Moz Pro — Best for Beginners
Price: $99/mo (Starter) – $599/mo (Premium)
What stood out: Easiest learning curve of any paid tool. Good for teams new to SEO. Domain Authority remains a useful (if imperfect) metric.
The trade-off: Found fewer issues than every other paid tool in our test. The crawler is less thorough than Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, or even Rankture.
Best for: Small teams starting their SEO journey who want hand-holding.
7. Google Search Console — Essential (But Not Enough)
Price: Free
What stood out: Zero false positives. Everything GSC flags is a real issue because it’s based on actual Google crawl and index data. The Core Web Vitals report uses real Chrome user data.
The trade-off: Only shows issues Google has already encountered. Doesn’t proactively crawl like a bot. Limited to indexed pages. No competitor data.
Best for: Everyone — as a complement to another tool, never as your only tool.
8. Google PageSpeed Insights — One Page at a Time
Price: Free
Good for: Spot-checking individual pages for Core Web Vitals. Uses real Chrome UX Report data.
Limitation: Can only test one URL at a time. Not a site audit tool. For site-wide speed analysis, use Rankture or Screaming Frog.
9. Seobility — Budget Monitoring
Price: Free (1 site) – $50/mo (Agency)
Good for: Basic ongoing monitoring at a low price point. Decent for small sites.
Limitation: Less thorough than other tools at similar or lower price points. Missed several issue categories in our test.
10. Bing Webmaster Tools — Worth the 5 Minutes
Price: Free
Good for: Free backlink data, SEO suggestions from Microsoft’s perspective, site scan tool.
Limitation: Lower detection rate than any other tool in our test. Use as supplementary data, not primary.
